Citizen Schools is a national nonprofit that partners with middle schools to expand the learning day and increase opportunities for low-income children. We are currently recruiting 10,000 scientists, engineers and STEM enthusiasts in Massachusetts and across the country to lead 12-week hands-on apprenticeship courses that build students’ skills and fuel their imaginations. Volunteers would work with a group of 15 students for 90 minutes each week, with a trained staff member to support you in the classroom at one of our Boston, Revere or New Bedford schools. We have curriculum for you to choose from, or we’d work with you to design your own. To learn more and sign up, visit www.citizenschools.org/volunteer or contact Stacey Harris.
We want your mind, passion and expertise in the classroom one afternoon a week. What will you teach?

The President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) met on July 15, 2011. Outgoing Federal CIO Vivek Kundra updated the committee and gave insights into many of the challenges he sees ahead. “I think the privacy implications are very, very serious,” Kundra said. “From a national security perspective what we’ve done is we’ve made sure that the NSC (National Security Council) is involved as we’re vetting some of these critical data sets.”
The four areas he focused on were:
1. Structural Challenges (See: 25 Point Plan to Reform Federal IT)
2. Efficiency and Effectiveness
3. Cybersecurity
4. Open Government
The video of his testimony is below:

Michael Daly, CISO, Ratheon
As large-scale security breaches become more commonplace, the challenge for most CIOs and chief information security officers (CISOs) is just trying to keep up with the threats — never mind innovating around IT security services.

CLIFFORD GRONAUER, CIO, Missouri State Highway Patrol
Most CIOs take on application modernization one legacy app at a time. That wasn’t the case with the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s intrepid CIO.
